AN EARLY 12-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN BY THOMAS BOSS, LONDON, serial no. 129,
pre-1839, with octagonal to round 32in. laminated browned barrel (later black powder London re-proof), carved girdle at intersection, blued squared patent breech with gold rectangular poincon to top relief embossed 'THOMAS BOSS PATENT' together with a crown, platinum line and vented plug, borderline and scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action lock, signed Thomas Boss 129 on the inside (main spring broken), walnut half-stock with smoothed chequering at wrist, iron furniture except white metal barrel key escutcheons and fore-end tip, ramrod with replacement iron tip (old repairs, and small losses to upper edges of fore-end)
Provenance: According to renowned historian Donald Dallas, records of Boss serial numbers did not begin until gun number 571, although it is known that gun number 280 was produced in 1839. With an annual production of around 50 guns per year, this would place no. 129 at around 1835 and was probably made at 1 Lower Grosvenor Street
